Inclement - Wild Colour Specimen of Oak
It's easy to see a storm coming on Dartmoor. The huge skies stretch for miles and miles, and when weather is coming, it's easy to spot if you're looking in the right direction. If you time it just right you can have your waterproofs out of the bag and donned before the storm arrives. This piece celebrates that moment when you turn and see the clouds approaching.
Created using inks made from the venerable oak tree. The oak has helped bring Dartmoor to fame through one of its famous upland temperate rainforests, Wistmans Woods. Although the woods are only a few miles from the house, we harvest our galls elsewhere on Dartmoor.
Oak galls are the harmless growth created in response to the gall wasp laying its eggs in the tree. The tree creates a small protective growth around the egg, and in due course, the wasp hatches, leaving a ball rich in tannins behind for safe harvesting. Wasps move from tree to tree so there’s no guarantee that you will find galls on the same tree year-on-year. It’s rare to find more than two or three galls within reaching distance on any given tree, and so the harvest takes place throughout the year and over many walks.
