Intro to Letterpress printing and bookbinding - Workshop in Devon, England
Do you have a hard time finding the perfect notebook? Maybe you've got a shelf full of the perfect notebooks that never seem to get used? Maybe you just love notebooks and the idea of making one with a letterpress cover is so completely over the top that you must give it a try.
In this full day workshop, you will design, print, and stitch up multiple softcover notebooks. You will leave with at least two completed notebooks, the supplies to make a few more, and the tools and knowledge you'll need to make a lifetime supply of notebooks.
The day is split into three parts:
- An overview of different book structures.
- Design and printing your notebook covers.
- Creating your own notebooks.
You will use our amazing vintage tools during the workshop to create a saddle stitched notebook, and spiral bound notebook. Then, you'll also learn how to hand-sew a single-section notebook, and combine single sections into multisection notebooks.
For your notebook covers, you will be able to print from our selection of metal and wood type, metal ornaments, and a few image blocks. In short: if you've seen something that we've printed in the past, you'll have access to it for this workshop as well. If you don't know what anything of those things are, that's okay. Most of our students are first-timers at the press. We'll walk you through everything you need to know (and leave out the stuff you don't need to know).
What's included:
- One-to-one support to design, print, and assemble multiple notebooks.
- All supplies, including a take-home bookbinding kit.
- Full day in the workshop, with full access to our printing supplies.
- Coffee/tea/cake/lunch are provided.
- You are welcome to bring a friend or family member at no additional charge. Please let us know at the time of booking if there will be one or two people attending. There will only be time to print one design.
- Accommodation can be arranged separately with our marvellous neighbours at Tor Royal B&B or Dartmoor glamping. Links open in a new window.
You will take home:
- A minimum of two completed notebooks (the intention is to finish four notebooks during the workshop).
- A minimum of six printed notebook covers (the intention is to complete four notebooks during the workshop).
- Supplies to complete a total of six notebooks (the intention is to finish four of these during the workshop).
- A simple bookbinding kit so you can make unlimited notebooks at home (the intention is to take home the supplies to make two more notebooks with printed covers at home, and the tools to make unlimited notebooks after that).
The workshop is open to everyone, however, there is not an accessible toilet on-site. Participants under the age of 18 will probably benefit from having an older family member or guardian present. The presses are designed to be used while standing, and there is limited seating. Please get in touch if you like to talk through any accommodations that might improve your experience in the studio, or if you have any other questions or concerns about the workshop or facilities.
The workshop is held at our workshop in Princetown, Devon, England. The space is unheated, so please dress warmly if you are booking a workshop during the colder months.
Workshop participants will have access to 15% off all Princetown Press products during their time at the studio.

All of our workshops are now private. They are perfect for friends, couples, and a guardian + child.
The studio is tiny. At maximum, we can accommodate two adults, or one adult and one child. The workshop fee includes one or two people. You do not need to pay separately for the second person.
Yes, kids are welcome! Generally speaking, the older the kids, the more likely they'll have the attention span for a multi-hour workshop. You know your little ones best, though.
To book a private workshop: buy a workshop through the website (i.e., on this page). We'll be in touch to find a mutually suitable date. The lead time is generally 1-2 months. If we can't agree on a date, you will receive a full refund. Once the date is agreed in writing (email), the standard cancellation policy will apply.
If you're not sure, please reach out before you book a workshop.

The workshop is held at Tor Royal Workshops, just outside Princetown. Some of the venue is wheelchair accessible, but the presses are designed to be used while standing and there is limited seating. Please get in touch if this will be challenging for you, and we can talk through what accommodations might improve your experience in the studio.
We will do everything we can to accommodate vulnerable workshop participants. This includes masking, keeping the window open, and having hand sanitiser available. You may be asked to wear a mask whilst in the workshop. We hope this is not an imposition, but if it is not possible for you to wear a mask, please let us know in advance.
