Downdraught - Wild Colour Specimen of Holly
Unlike many of the other trees we forage from, holly trees are dioecious, the male and female plants are different, and which means you don’t get berries on every tree. This can make the adventures of finding the right tree that much more fun. It’s not just a matter of spotting that deep, evergreen leaf, but also spotting whether or not it has berries.
My favourite foraging experience with holly involved a trek across the high moor in very questionable winter conditions. My waterproofs were in and out of my bag, map-and-compass to hand as several times the conditions were near whiteout. I had a vague memory of there being a young holly tree near the Devonport leat and, although I was right, there were but a handful of berries that were so close to the trunk of the tree that I couldn’t get my monkey fists close enough to them to pluck them. It was no loss to leave the berries there. I had a wonderful adventure and a story to tell, instead.
