Snowdrops near Grimspound - Wild Colour Specimen of Beech
Beech has been nicknamed the Queen of the Forest, its the lace-like canopy creates a dense cover with wonderful dark shade. So much shade, in fact, that other plants will struggle to grow in her shadow. Thus, beech is an apex tree (as opposed to an early successional, such as birch).
The leaves are edible and have a wonderful lemony tart flavour, if you don’t mind the fuzz. From the bud, a male and female flower will emerge. The pollinated female flower will become a woody container for the beech mast (the tree fruit/nuts). Not every year though. Seemingly erratically, every 2-5 years. Ish. Most of our mast husks were foraged from Beech Hedge, southwest of Hameldown Beacon Rocks. In future years, we may need to look elsewhere.
