Ravens at Dawn - Wild Colour Specimen of Rowan
In the deepest of the dark winter, my dailyish walk begins before sunrise. When I'm lucky, the ravens will perch on the skyline just before dawn. There's a pair who travel with me on my walk, circling overhead and sometimes stopping to chat. Their distinctive rawk-rawk unmistakable from a crow.
Rowan is a very pretty tree due to its unusual compound leaves, bright bark, and bright red berries. It prefers well drained soils and tends to hang out along ridge lines, especially surrounding old quarries, of which there are many on Dartmoor. It can make the collection of berries a little challenging as you edge closer to an edge trying to decide if you’re tall enough to reach the berries. In my case, usually not, and I often resort to collecting from windfall.
