Otters playing at Two Bridges - Wild Colour Specimen of Hawthorn
About a mile south of Wistman's Wood, and about two miles from our home, the West Dart flows beneath a double arched stone bridge. The river is home to extremely elusive otters. We've seen evidence of them, but never the otters themselves.
In 2023, we had a brilliant year for haws, the berries that grow on hawthorn trees. The weather was perfect. The spring was cold and wet, and then summer arrived for six weeks in May and June, before winter returned in early July. The hot period reminded us why hawthorn is known as the May tree. Delicate white flowers appeared on trees that had seemed dead and dormant the year before. It was as if the hawthorn trees had coordinated a Japanese cherry blossom festival across the moor. In 2024, however, the conditions were different, and finding haws in the autumn took considerably more effort. The trick was to find the right microclimate, and in 2024, it was along the River Swincombe, one of the tributaries of the River Dart.
