Beneath the storm cloud - Wild Colour Specimen of Gorse
There's a special light, that's difficult to catch on camera, where the storm clouds overhead allow a blast of sunshine low on the skyline. You need big skies to catch the phenomenon, and Dartmoor has those in spades. Every now and then, when the light is just so, the sunshines from below, the moor shimmering bright, echoing sunshine.
On Dartmoor, it seems like there’s always a corner of gorse in bloom somewhere. The prevalent common gorse blooms from January to June, but we also get a second appearance of different blossoms in the autumn, which I can only assume are Western gorse. Gorse, or furze as it’s locally known, is actually part of the pea family. Look closely at the blossoms, and you will likely recognise the flowers now that you know the family they’re from.
About the Print
